Being too tall for one’s age and one’s parents may be a cause for concern. Unfortunately, because being tall is socially very acceptable, we do not see many of these referrals in time. There are many reasons as child may be too tall. There could be a host of reasons like excessive nutrition, family’s size, multiple genetic causes and hormonal excesses (for example thyroid, pubertal hormones, growth hormone). If you suspect your child is too tall, you must seek a consultation with a Paediatric endocrinologist to ensure it is none of the above. Some children get teased and bullied at school and get mentally upset with being too tall too. It is wise to act early on both, diagnosing the medical reason behind tall stature, and to sort out the social and mental ill-effects of this. Early intervention leads to better outcomes.
